The Struggles of Dog Rescue: How you can help

At High Hopes Rescue, we are facing the hardest year in our history. The reality of running a small dog rescue has become overwhelmingly challenging, and for the first time, we’re seriously questioning whether we can continue.

The number of adoptions has drastically fallen this year, leaving many of our dogs stuck in kennels for 18 months or more. These dogs are wonderful companions, full of love and potential, but they’ve been waiting for far too long, with no families stepping forward to take them home. What are we supposed to do when our kennel bills keep climbing, and the adoptions simply aren’t happening?

The Growing Cost of Care

Each year, it costs us £2,500 to keep just one dog in our main kennel facility. For the alternate kennels we use, the cost is more than double that. We’re facing the harsh reality that it’s not sustainable to keep these dogs in kennels indefinitely. Our bills are mounting, and without adoptions or donations, we’re constantly operating at a loss. We have even more dogs waiting to come in, but there’s just no room, no funds, and no way to help them.

The heartbreaking part is that many owners are threatening to put their dogs to sleep or send them to other rescues if we don’t act fast enough. We’re seeing so many dogs suffer, and we feel powerless to do anything. Our resources are stretched to the limit.

The Dogs Who Wait

We have so many beautiful dogs who are desperate for homes, yet they’ve had no interest for months—some for years. These aren’t unwanted dogs; they’re simply overlooked. They’ve done nothing wrong but are paying the price of a broken system.

In addition to our kennel expenses, our vet bills are enormous. We work with a small team that pours countless hours into caring for these dogs, but we simply don’t have enough time to dedicate to fundraising.

How You Can Help

We urgently need support from our community and beyond. Whether it’s through donations, regular contributions, or helping to form a fundraising team, your assistance could make all the difference.

  • Donations: Every donation, big or small, helps us stay afloat. Regular donations, even just a few pounds a month, would give us the stability we desperately need.

  • Fostering: If you have experience with dogs and can provide a temporary home for one of our kennel dogs, please reach out. None of our dogs can live with children or other pets, so we need experienced owners who can give them the love and care they need while they wait for their forever home.

  • Fundraising: We’re in desperate need of people who can help us with fundraising efforts. If you have the time and passion to help organize events or spread the word, we’d love to hear from you.

  • Corporate Support: If you work for a company that’s looking for a charity to support, we would be beyond grateful for any help or even a simple mention. A name drop could go a long way in helping us survive this crisis.

Please, if you can, help us give these dogs the second chance they deserve.
