Slow and Steady: Lucky’s Story

Lucky spent months pretending to be invisible in his new home. Two years of patience, love and a lurcher called Missy helped him become the content chap he was meant to be.

Lucky met his forever mummy at our “Meet the Dogs” day in January 2024, matched with fellow Romanian lurcher Missy and her wonderfully exuberant personality.

He was so loved at the rescue that the day he was collected, he had a huge send-off from the volunteers, complete with a pre-arranged local radio interview and plenty of tears.

The road ahead wasn’t easy. Lucky showed anxious behaviour for many months. Harness time was particularly difficult, and for a long while he seemed happiest pretending he was invisible. It was clear he had experienced hardship in the past, as he was head shy and nervous around sudden movements.

But his new family understood that trust can’t be rushed. After two years of patience and love, with Missy encouraging him along the way (especially into the occasional game of tug, usually played from the comfort of his bed, because effort is overrated according to Lucky), he slowly began to relax into his new life.

Now, Lucky is truly settling into his forever home. He happily ventures upstairs to sleep, makes sure morning lie-ins don’t run on too long when walks are due, and gets wonderfully excited when he recognises favourite places on car journeys. Most importantly, he has become the relaxed, content chap he was always meant to be.

Watching a rescue dog grow in confidence and discover happiness is one of the greatest joys there is, and Lucky’s journey is a beautiful reminder of why rescue matters.
